"Dial-A-Song" started out as a project by They Might Be Giants, running from 1983 to 2006.  It allowed people to call a phone number in Brooklyn and listen to a sampling, song, jingle, or other musical sample on an answering machine owned by TMBG.

The idea was based on the "Dial-A-Prayer" service that's been running since 1955.
