Top Eleven: Things I Blogged About In 2014

Another year of writing, complaining, and commending down, hopefully many more to go.

Each year I've done this blog (read: last year) I've done a year end "wrap-up" where I scour through my archives and attempt to locate the eleven articles that mean the most to me.  Maybe they're connected to an important memory, maybe they were extremely emotional to write, or maybe I just had fun writing them.

And yes, there will also be a "bottom eleven" coming as well.

But for now, let's look back at the articles I'm the most proud of from the past year.

Ask Erik: Episode 70

To Erik: What do you think of Archie Andrews being killed off?

Immediate clarification:  See, they didn't actually kill off Archie.  There's a separate book titled Life With Archie that- ...okay, look, this is going to take a while.  Start reading below.

Ask Erik: Episode Sixty-Nine

To Erik: Do you think we're creating an issue when we make movies regarding something originally child-focused (like a teddy bear, X-Men, Transformers) and make it a movie for adults?

This is in response to my previous post about children seeing movies rated "M" for "Mature."  And it's actually something I've thought about, but never really managed to ask myself the right way.  So kudos to the asker for prompting this.

Ask Erik: Episode Sixty-Seven

To Erik: Who are your comedic influences?

Despite the fact that I tend to not be able to stand any of the newer "comedies" that come out in movie theaters, comedy has always been a pretty big part of my life.  Watching stand-up performances, classic humor movies, and even older cartoons all set me down the path of trying to be "funny" (or if not that, at least mildly entertaining) from a young age.

There are some pretty obvious influences, but some that might not be as well known.  I've even included a few modern influences, since my sense of humor is constantly shifting and adapting as I find just the right tone of humor to be "me."

Ask Erik: Episode Sixty-Six

To Erik:  So, what's been going on with the blog lately?

This wasn't really asked to me by someone else, but it's something I had to ask myself over the past few weeks.

I'll admit, starting a new job got the better of me for a while, and I found myself stuck between trying to make sure my schedule stayed consistent, attempting to get things done around the home, and still doing this blog.  This caused a few projects I'm working on to stall, leading me to not have posts ready when I originally intended them.

This is why you were getting two posts on one day for a while.  However, even that became rather overwhelming after a while, and I found myself needing to skip days just to get other (sadly) more important jobs done.

However, I'm swearing to redouble my efforts to keep this going strong from now on.  I don't get a paycheck from it, and I'm not even really sure how many people look at it any given time (though based on the views per day, I'm steadily going up every week), but this has never been about that.

The purpose of this blog is to keep me writing and keep me mentally engaged.  When work threatens to become my entire life, when I start to feel overwhelmed by everything going on, or when I just need something to focus on so I can reorganize myself and get caught up, this blog is that outlet for me.  I get to practice my writing skills while finally having an excuse to see those television programs/movies/books/etc I've been meaning to for so long.

Now, granted, I could allow ad banners here in an attempt to make a bit of money off of this, but I'm putting that off until I know for sure this thing has actually become something bigger, which, I'll admit, it might never be.  But in the meantime, it serves its purpose.

Ask Erik: Episode Sixty Four

To Erik: What'd you do for Mother's Day?

Well, the original plan was to go to a nice restaurant for brunch, but...well, let me get into the details.

Ask Erik Episode Sixty Three

To Erik: What sounds drive you insane or annoy you the most?

This isn't going to be a very long answer, but I've had this question sitting on the back burner, and while I still get acclimated to my new job, one that doesn't involve a lot of work seems appropriate.

Ask Erik Episode Sixty-One

I haven't really done an Ask Erik that was a bit personal, but fortunately today a question dropped into my lap that I'm happy to answer.

To Erik: What do you like for music, like your top twenty?

Ask Erik Episode Sixty

Here at Ask Erik, we treat every question with the respect it deserves, and would never dare to cross any line that would leave us looking either racist, sexist, or any other kind of "-ist."  Now, with that in mind:

To Erik: What would it take for a woman to lose her "woman card" like how a guy can lose his "man card?"

I am so doomed.

Ask Erik: Episode Fifty-Eight

I thought I'd dig around in my question bin.  There's a question I've been meaning to answer, I just had to do some research before I wanted to state anything as fact.

Because here at Ask Erik, if we don't have our integrity, we have nothing.

To Erik:  What are the worst superhero tie-ins you've ever seen?

Ask Erik: Episode Fifty-Seven

For this week's Ask Erik, we're going a bit more...medial.  Media-esque?  Technolog- Televisiona- no... man, I don't know where we're going.

To Erik:  What do you think about Psych ending tonight?

Ask Erik: Episode Fifty-Six

To Erik: Are there types of movies you just avoid completely?

Yeah, bad ones.  ...well, okay, that's not really true, but I will give you an honest answer.

Ask Erik: Episode Fifty-Five

You ask, me answer.  Pretty simple, no?

To Erik: Who do you see as the best political candidate for each party for President?

...aw, man.

Ask Erik: Episode Fifty-Four

I was torn this week between writing about newspaper comics (my favorites and least favorites), how I'd try to "fix" DC comics, and a few other nerdy topics, but I'm saving those for upcoming columns.  Today, I'm looking back to the 90s.

To Erik:  What job that you had was the most fun?

People who know me tend to know what my favorite job I ever had was.  That would be the non-profit I worked for that got telecommunications equipment out to people with disabilities.

However, the most fun?

Not even close.

For that, we go back to the late 90s, when I was an ed tech for summer school classes at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

For anyone who hasn't been there, the National Zoo is a pretty amazing place.  It covers a huge area in the city, and is divided up into different sections based on species and/or region the animals came from.

The variety of animals is pretty spectacular, and I say that as somebody who visited a lot of zoos in his life.  No, seriously, if I travel anywhere and learn that there's a zoo nearby, I make sure to take a day to visit.  I'm almost as avid about aquariums, but I will admit I've let a few slip by me.

When I worked there, it was a volunteer position, but I still considered it a job.  I had set hours, I had a supervisor, and I had a uniform to wear.

I was also more knowledgeable about the animals than the actual teachers were.  While the teachers were handling the overall classroom mechanics and leading the classes around the zoo, I was explaining to children about how dangerous an emu or ostrich can be, why the red panda isn't correctly named.  I would improvise a quick craft session to teach kids how huge the wingspan of an albatross is, or how powerful the jaws of a crocodile can be.

I also got to take part in animal demonstrations.  Granted, I wasn't really allowed to hold wild animals or guide them around on leashes, but there was a moment at the bat pen I got to stand inside the pen to help the teacher show how bats can "see" with sonar.  I also had a titi monkey jump on me once, but that was just when I was standing near an open display the monkeys were allowed to hang out on.

It's also where I had my favorite lunch ever.  Of all time.

Now, the lunch itself was pretty simple.  A sandwich, a piece of fruit, and a small bottle of juice.  Sometimes a candy bar, otherwise pretty basic stuff.

The best part would be where I'd get to eat my lunch.

Amazingly enough, the bird house isn't the most popular spot in any zoo.  I never understood why, since even at that time people were realizing that birds are more closely related to dinosaurs than most lizards are.  Watching how wings move on creatures varying in size from the tiniest hummingbird to an eagle, or watching how they're able to position themselves to walk between branches is fascinating to me.

But towards the back is a curtained off area.  It's not closed to the public, but there would almost never be anybody in there.  It was a cage with a black light shining at the top of it which is where the zoo kept the kiwis.

It was a small, circular chamber, where you could sit on a bench and watch the kiwis run around in their enclosure.  It was private, away from any of the city noise that might spread into the zoo, I just loved watching the little birds run back and forth.

The program was only a couple of months long, but I remember having an absolute blast the whole time, even if I wasn't getting paid.  It wasn't just getting to hang around one of my favorite types of locations, but also seeing the looks on the faces of the children as they learned something that excited them, or discovered something they never knew that was fun.  It was a thrill being able to see the excitement build on their faces as you approached a new pen or they heard the door knob click because someone was bringing an animal to see them.  They were never disappointed in what they saw, and the excitement was always contagious.

Ask Erik: Episode Fifty-Three

To Erik:  Hey, didn't you get a PS4?

As a matter of fact, I did.

Is it any good?

...as a game system or as a door stop?

The former.

Okay, thanks for clarifying.

Ask Erik: Episode Fifty-Two

So, for today's Ask Erik we're pulling back the curtain a little bit and digging both into my own history and the blog's history.

To Erik: Your site is called Erik At The Gates, but the website is "packsjunk?"  What's up with that?

It was pointed out to me not too long ago that "packsjunk" sounds more like I'm doing a blog about Kardashian posteriors than anything nerdy.  Or intelligent.

This, of course, is not the case.

This might be hard for some people out there to believe, but for a long time a lot of my conversations in life came through "Internet Relay Chat" (during the 90s and early 2000s), and various MU* programs (MUSH, MUCK, MOO) which stood for...well, I never really knew what they stood for, but they were online text communications that people used for games, goofing off, and practicing their programming techniques.

Also, during the late 90s, I got caught up in some of the Pokemon craze as it hit America.  I played the original games (yes, both the red and blue ones) and I can proudly say I did, in fact, catch them all.  There was a chat room back in the day where people could discuss how they were doing in the games, and since I was a collector of many various things, I took the code name (by which I mean "chat handle") "Packrat."

Packrat became a name I used in a lot of places, and even in some sites I signed up for a long time ago, because using my name at the start of an email address or website registry just seemed "boring."  And amazingly enough, it wasn't widely used.  I guess being a "pack rat" had some kind of negative connotation, but I just knew it to mean that I usually always had something to keep my interest and when I got bored of something, I could usually adapt it over to a new hobby.

As time went on, I was less and less able to use the name "Packrat" so I had to try thinking of variations on a theme.  When I started this blog, I struggled to think of something to call it, and in a fit of nostalgia and desperation I thought I'd call it "Packrat's Junkyard."  A place where anything could be dug up and talked about.

However, "Packratsjunkyard" felt long, so I thought I'd narrow it down to "Pack's Junk" for the web address and just keep the full name of the blog for the header.  However, once I decided to really sit down and take this thing seriously, I felt I had to rename it with something a bit more official, and "Erik At The Gates" won out amongst the other names I was thinking.

I still believe "The Everpresent Wordsnatcher" had potential, but I figured most people never read The Phantom Tollbooth.  Maybe I could've gotten away with "From The Mouth Of The Dodecahedron" or "The Terrible Trivium" though.

Anonymity and a dapper sense of style?  Perfect for the Internet.
Anyway, back on topic.  You can't have an apostrophe in a web address, so "Pack's Junk" wound up being "packsjunk" which is why I'm either trying to celebrate having a trunk that Beyonce could describe as "bootylicious" or I'm celebrating other ones.

Ask Erik: Episode Fifty-One

To Erik:  What gives?  Where's the blog posts?

My apologies to everyone, the last few days have been rather hectic for me.  I think the highlight of my week is going to be Tuesday, when, after spending two hours out in a large, snowy field with the dog because I couldn't find the toy she was chasing (a note to the woman who tried to help me, I appreciate the effort, but you were stomping around in snowshoes, and that just flattened everything).  This was then followed up with another hour of my searching for my keys that apparently fell out of my pocket.

Today was spent with a metal detector in said snowy field attempting to locate my keys.  No luck.

So after the hours yesterday spent in the cold and today spent trying to catch up on everything I missed out on doing because of hours spent in the cold yesterday, I'm just now really getting up to speed.

Plus, since that doesn't really answer a real question, I think I'll do one more.

To Erik: What got you interested in cooking?

Ask Erik: The Big Five-O

Here at Ask Erik, we- holy cow, this is the fiftieth article?

Man, I knew some kind of event was coming up, but I thought it was a total number of articles thing, not this.  It completely slipped my mind.

Crud, I had some questions I was setting aside for a day like this, let's see if I can pull them out of the archives.

Okay, to celebrate a milestone, I'm answering ten questions I had been asked in the past year but thought they either needed some extra time to make sure I worded them right, thought about them fully, or that they were just too short to get a full article.

Let's go!

Ask Erik: Episode Forty-Nine

Today at Ask Erik we're going to tackle something a bit less nerdy and a bit more healthy.  With obesity rates and health concerns racking up medical bills across the country, and with the recent news that obesity can become an issue for children before they even enter school it seems like people are cutting unhealthy stuff in more and more ways and trying to replace it with a healthy "alternative."

But is it really that much better for you?

To Erik: Are baked potato chips really healthier than fried potato chips?

Yes and no.
